Lieutenant John Marshall (c.1784-1837) compiled one of the most useful naval biographies ever produced, being of significant importance on the lives of naval officers who had fought in the recent Napoleonic Wars. Marshall provides biographies of 2,363 officers from the rank of commander upwards. As a source of reference it is unsurpassed and fills a gap between John Charnock’s Biographia Navalis of the 1790s (giving naval biographies from 1660 to that period) ; and O’Byrne’s Naval Biographical Dictionary of 1849 (giving biographies of all officers in the January 1845 Navy List.). In addition to the biographies themselves, Marshall provides accounts of all the naval actions and events from 1760 down to the 1820s & 1830s. Volume III, Part 1 for example, has its first 120 pages dedicated to naval operations in Ava, during the Burmese War of 1824. However, its main strength is to be found in its biographies of those officers who had seen action during the ‘Great War’ against Revolutionary France and its allies. Complete sets are SCARCE.
